If you have recently welcomed a new dog into your family, you will know that the training period can be stressful. Especially if you have never trained a dog before, it can be hard to know if you are doing it right or slowing down their progress.
As an expert in dog training techniques, Lauren Swist is using her skills to train her dog to be a therapy animal and is offering therapy and obedience training services. Today she shares the top 3 common mistakes people make when training their dogs.
- Not sticking to a schedule. You shouldn’t be training your dog for hours on end, but creating a training routine is so important. 15 minutes per day every other day is a great schedule.
- Being inconsistent with the rules. If you want to stop your dog from begging at the table, do not ever give them food from the table. Making an occasional exception as a treat will only confuse your dog and reinforce the behavior you don’t want.
- Using negative reinforcement. Acting aggressively towards your dog as a way to punish them for bad behavior will not help. It will only make them fearful of you and can cause them to act aggressively as well. It is so important to train using positive reinforcement.
