Constant barking can be really frustrating for new dog owners. Barking is one of the ways dogs communicate, like how people talk. You should expect your dog to bark because it is natural. However sometimes dogs can bark excessively, and there are things you can do to prevent this.

- Figure out why your dog is barking. Dogs bark if they are afraid, lonely, protecting their territory, playing, wanting attention, or having separation anxiety.
- Don’t shout at your dog if they are barking. They will just think you are barking along with them and they will bark more.
- Teach your dog the “Quiet” command. Say it in a calm but firm voice and give them a treat and praise once they stop barking. Using positive reinforcement techniques is key to training your dog.
- Dogs don’t bark as much if they are tired, so make sure they are getting an adequate amount of exercise. If they bark a lot while you are at work, for example, take them on a walk before you leave.
- Keep your dog mentally stimulated by playing with them and giving them toys and puzzles to play with.
- Make sure that your dog isn’t barking because of a medical problem. Older dogs are susceptible to canine dementia, which can cause excessive barking.
