Every dog owner has at one point had to deal with a dog who barks excessively. This can be an absolute headache for dog owners.
As a therapy dog trainer, I have a lot of experience training dogs, including ones that bark excessively. If you’ve just brought home a dog for the first time, and don’t know how to get them to stop, this guide is for you.
3 Tips For Teaching Your Dog Not To Bark
1. Don’t yell at them
It might seem counterintuitive, but yelling or raising your voice can actually make barking worse.
Dogs can interpret loud noises as you joining in, or they might feel more anxious. Instead, maintain a calm demeanor, and use a firm, yet gentle command, such as “quiet” or “enough.”
2. Reward them when they are quiet
Positive reinforcement is key.
If your furry friend remains silent when they typically bark, reward them with a treat or affection. For instance, if they tend to bark before meal times, ensure you only serve their food once they’ve settled and are silent. Over time, they’ll associate being quiet with positive outcomes.
3. Make sure they are active enough
A common reason for excessive barking is pent-up energy or boredom.
Dogs need both physical exercise and mental stimulation. Regular walks, playtime, and even some training sessions can work wonders in curbing unwanted barking. If your canine companion is left alone for extended periods, consider engaging a dog sitter or investing in interactive toys to keep them occupied.
